Polyptych of the Madonna Enthroned: Detail, Simeon

Simeon spoke the words on the scroll after he had seen the child Jesus in the Temple: Nunc dimittis servum tuum, "Now thou dost dismiss thy servant" (Luke 2:29). The phrase is part of Compline, the final prayer of the day in the canonical hours.
